Venus with Organist (c.1548) and Cupid By Titian

The Venus and Cupid with an Organist is variation on the theme of the earlier Venus of Urbino. Aside from the emphasis on the idealized beauty of the nude goddess, it is generally believed that symbolism is involved in these pictures, although the precise meanings have been variously interpreted.

Venus and Cupid with an Organist features a roughly symmetrical space with a fountain in the middle of the image dividing the organist and organ, left, from Venus and Cupid, right. The red curtains and the organ pipes create a solid frame around the human figures keeping them from lilting off the image toward the right, which they look like they might otherwise do. The eye first hits the bright body of Venus, travels down her legs to the organist, up to his pale face, across to the fountain and back to the interaction between Cupid and Venus. Eventually the eye tires of the circle and follows the fountain through the line of trees to the bright sky. In this image, light guides the eye from one important object to another, creating a bond or interaction between them.

The organist stares intently at Venus‘s midriff while she focuses on Cupid, not unaware of the organist, but unconcerned by his gaze. The organist is so entranced by the immodest, displayed body of the goddess that he has almost left off playing to admire or reach to touch her. She busily listens to her son, offering the organist nothing but a landscape to view. There is nothing in her posture or her face that suggests any invitation for the organist to touch her or join in her conspiracy. It seems that the background represents a painting within a painting, a beautiful landscape that is no more accessible to the hands of the organist than the body of Venus. They are both objects that he can observe and admire, but neither own nor control.
