The Three Graces is one of the Rubens‘ final works. He had portrayed this theme several times since about 1620, but only later adopted the form that prevailed in classical Antiquity, with the three figures forming a circle so that one of them has her back to a spectator.

The painting of three nude figures illustrates the artist‘s extraordinary handling of human flesh tones. Rubens builds them up using the three primary colors yellow, red and blue. An unusually high proportion of blue is evident here. In this way, the human figure bears the same primary colors that make up the appearance of the world and the entire cosmos, and all that are gathered here in the landscape and flowers, the sky and the trees.

The Three Graces illustrates also drawing style of the late Rubens‘ paintings: bodies are often anatomically blatantly incorrect, legs don‘t fit to bellies, arms not to chests, but the general impression is that of great, abundant life. It becomes apparent, that this is far from a photo realistic image. What does that mean? Was Rubens just not accurate enough? Probably he was, but with the purpose. Distortion can express feelings and other things not easily expressed visually. That makes art of Rubens so special and distinguish.
