Alexandre Cabanel (28 September 1823 - 23 January 1889) was a French painter. Cabanel was born at Montpellier, and studied in Paris, gaining the Prix de Rome in 1845. His pictures soon attracted attention, and by his The Birth of Venus (1863), now in the Luxembourg, Alexandre Cabanel became famous, being elected that year to the Institute. Alexandre Cabanel became the most popular portrait painter of the day, and his pupils included a number of famous artists.
Cabanel was a successful academic painter. His The Birth of Venus is one of the best known examples of 19th century academic painting. The picture was bought by the emperor Napoleon III.
He was closely connected to the Paris Salon. In 1863 he refused together with William-Adolphe Bouguereau to allow the impressionist painter Édouard Manet and other painters to exhibit their works in the Salon of 1863 led to the establishment of the Salon des Refusés.
